SPLAT was developed to better equip high school students for the challenges of life-long Christian ministry and discipleship. In my twelve years of ministering to youth – first as a pastor and then as a teacher – I saw the weaknesses of youth camp and mission trips. Youth camps often served students, creating an environment where teens believed everything should be about them. Mission trips were expensive and difficult to organize efficiently. I wondered if there was a way to change the perspective of a Christian teenager from feeling the need to be served and loved, to being the one who could serve and love others. To do this, I felt students needed to be pushed physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually to accept and appreciate the challenges that a life of faith holds. Through SPLAT I’ve seen that students are strong, and can handle challenges far beyond what we normally place on them. In fact, they often look forward to accomplishing things that some adults wouldn’t have the guts to do. SPLAT is designed to help students conquer their fears, erase personal stereotypes, learn how to survive without the comforts of home, and gain a broader vision of ministry within their communities. SPLAT is also the ultimate road trip, where godly friendships are built and strengthened.
